Why China Won’t Open This Tomb (The Mercury Curse)

Why has no one opened the tomb of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang? In 1974, farmers discovered the Terracotta Army—but the central burial chamber remains sealed. Ancient historian Sima Qian wrote of rivers of liquid mercury, automated crossbows, and a map of China flowing underground. Modern science confirms mercury levels 100x above normal around the tomb. Scientists fear deadly vapor, still-functional booby traps, unknown pathogens, and flooding from ancient water systems. A 1997 Chinese law now bans excavation of emperor tombs—not from respect alone, but because we lack the technology to survive what’s inside. This documentary short reveals the real reasons researchers are terrified. Based entirely on historical records, including Sima Qian’s "Records of the Grand Historian" (91 BCE) and 2005 geological surveys at Mount Li.
