Learning Tuesdays | California's $2 Billion Settlement: Implementation of Spending to Advance Equity

A historic $2 billion settlement in California concluded a lawsuit that claimed that the state in 2020, during the first months of the pandemic, had failed its constitutional obligation to provide an equal education. Specifically, the lawsuit focused on lower-income, Black and Hispanic students, who had less access to online learning during these months and therefore, not an equal education. The state in the settlement has agreed to use at least $2 billion meant for pandemic recovery to support these students academically and must follow a stricter use of the funding including identifying students who need the most support and implementing evidence-based interventions. This webinar will explore the legal strategy and implications of this lawsuit and settlement, not just for California but for any state or local education leaders who want to implement education funding effectively and equitably. In a time when many states are reckoning with state funding formulas that are not equitable, this is an important conversation for leaders nationwide to learn about the tools of litigation as well as legislation to improve the amount, allocations, and implementation of state and local education spending.
