Under operational conditions, in some cases, we can use FRP patches to repair defective equipment and structures, or to reinforce intact ones. In cases where installing FRP patches is applicable, the following questions will focus on the number of layers and the fiber direction of each layer. Given the complex stress state due to elliptical cracks in the defective structure, especially when adding a FRP patch, analytical solutions cannot provide accurate predictions, and nonlinear FEA is the only powerful tool to help us in this regard.
This tutorial explains in detail the procedure for obtaining the answers to the above questions. Modeling details regarding the definition of FRP-to-structure connections, the number of layers, fiber direction, and the use of different materials in the FRP patch due to operating conditions are discussed.
