The Alien Woman at Galactic Passport Control Saw
My Name and Bowed Before Me in Fear and Respect
I had been in the queue for forty minutes.
I had a carry-on bag, a rolling suitcase, and a standard passport renewed four months ago for forty-two pounds. I was going to visit my granddaughter. I was nobody particularly important.
The alien officer took my passport. Pressed it to the reader. Looked at her terminal.
And went completely still.
Then the terminal went red. Then gold. Then she inclined her head in the formal Vel'Mara bow — the one reserved for the highest tier of Coalition designations — and said: "Please bear with me for one moment."
The gold panel said: MARSH, DANIEL EDWARD — CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE CONTRIBUTOR — PRIORITY TRANSIT.
Twenty-one years ago I was twenty-six years old on a colonial construction project on Verta IV. I noticed a stress fracture pattern in a foundation that the lead engineers said was within acceptable tolerance. I filed three reports. I escalated to the Coalition Oversight Council. They sent an inspector. The foundation was rebuilt.
The settlement on Verta IV currently houses four hundred and thirty thousand people.
I went home. I resumed my ordinary life. I renewed my passport for forty-two pounds.
The Coalition kept records.
When the senior officer apologized for the forty-minute queue time as a protocol violation, I told him the queue was fine.
I had a book.
