This presentation examines the biblical and historical authenticity of tithing money. It argues that money was not excluded from God’s system of offerings, but was accepted and integrated into religious worship from the earliest periods of Israel’s history.
Through scripture, we will demonstrate that temple taxes, silver shekels, spoils of war, wages, and dedicated treasures were all recognized as holy things devoted to God. The biblical economy was not limited to agriculture alone; it also included trade, labor, silver, gold, and financial transactions. Therefore, the claim that tithing applied only to crops and livestock ignores significant scriptural evidence.
The treasury chambers of the Temple were specifically designed to store treasures, including silver and gold. These resources were used to maintain the Temple, support the priesthood, and fund the work of God’s house. Scripture repeatedly shows that money entered the Temple lawfully and was accepted by both the priests and by God Himself.
The central question, therefore, is not whether money existed in biblical worship — it clearly did. The real question is this:
If God accepted money in His Temple, why would the increase earned through labor and wages be excluded from the principle of the tithe?
This study contends that the tithe was based upon increase, not merely agriculture. Whether increase came through livestock, harvest, spoils, trade, or wages, the principle remained the same: the tenth belonged to the Lord.
