Learn Tibetan | Lesson 3: The Secret of Honorifics — Would You Say “Eat” Differently to a Lama?

བཀྲ་ཤིས་བདེ་ལེགས — Tashi Delek!-*

Welcome to Tibetan Tidbits, our short and practical Tibetan language course.
Today’s third lesson is about honorific forms in Tibetan — the polite and respectful words used when speaking to or about elders and respected people.

For example:
📖 The ordinary word for “book” is དེབ (deb)
📖 The honorific word is ཕྱག་དེབ (chag-deb)

Honorifics are an important part of everyday communication in Tibetan, much like polite speech in Japanese or Chinese.

💡 Fun fact: This is actually the first lesson I ever made, even though it’s appearing as Lesson 3 in the course!

🌏 In the following videos, we’ll continue exploring the Tibetan language along with its history and culture.
👤 About me: I am a professional Tibetologist and novice video creator, excited to share my knowledge with a wider audience.
