Do data structures and algorithms still matter for software developers (outside of interviews)?

Does knowing how to optimize data structures and algorithms still matter for software developers (outside of interviews)?

I’ve watched real-world apps exceed RAM limits, trigger crashes, or rack up costs because of inefficient O(n²) (or worse) logic that hammers resource-heavy DB or API calls.

Software devs still have to ask themselves questions like:
• How does the code they ship scale?
• What happens when 12 users jump to 1 million?

Every extra operation could equal more tokens, more cash, more headaches. It sucks when found that a more efficient algorithm could’ve saved on time and money.

Yes — today AI can write a lot of this optimized code, but it can also miss context and ship bad logic. Knowing time/space complexity lets you catch the costly mistakes.
