Buccal fat pad removal is a very exotic-sounding procedure. Basically, it's a facial contouring procedure. Now, all of us, when we are born, have cheeks, and in the cheek, there is a fat pad called the buccal fat pad, and that contributes to the fullness of the cheeks and gives a youthful look. However, in certain individuals, it may be more pronounced, and those who prefer a narrower-looking cheek or a hollowed-out appearance may consider undergoing buccal fat pad removal. However, one thing you need to remember is that this is not an isolated surgery. It is an additive surgery to one of the procedures that you will do to improve the contours of your face. Pure-only buccal fat pad removal may not yield the results you desire. Most of the time, I would combine it with a rhinoplasty (that is a nose job) or a chin augmentation (that is a chin job), and a buccal fat pad removal, because all put together holistically will give you a much better result than getting a buccal fat pad removal alone. The buccal fat pad removal is a fairly simple procedure. It is done from inside the mouth, so there are no scars. Approach the buccal fat from inside the mouth, remove the fat pad, make sure that there is no bleeding, and then there will be a few stitches, which will heal within about 5 to 7 days. As a surgical procedure, it is simple. It is a same-day surgery. However, you should know that it is usually not an isolated procedure. You may combine it with other procedures, and depending on the other procedure, it may or may not be a same-day surgery, or you may have to stay overnight. Now, when we do buccal fat pad removal, it is a surgery done on the face. The face has lax soft tissue, and it has a lot of open spaces inside. The face will tend to swell up after surgery. So anytime you undergo a face surgery, there will be oedema, and the face will swell up, which is also true for a buccal fat pad removal. So whenever you remove the buccal fat, you may experience a little puffiness or fullness around the cheeks. There may be some bruising around there. All these are temporary. Within anywhere between 1 to 3 weeks, all these will disappear, and your nicely contoured cheeks will be visible to you at the end of about 3 weeks or so. Will the buccal fat pad come back? No. The body is not known to do that. Once you remove the buccal fat pad, it will never come back, because there is no way the body is going to go and deposit fat into the buccal fat. Even if you do put on weight, it is a one-time procedure. However, a word of caution, remember that this is an additive surgery; it is not an isolated surgery which can stand alone on its own feet and give you good desired results. Won’t it cause hollow cheeks? Yes, if it’s overtly done, you will get hollow cheeks. That’s it, it may have a sunken look, and if you're very unfortunate, you may have unequal hollowness on both sides. This is something that you need to carefully consider. Talk to your surgeon. And if you are one of those unfortunate people who have got too much hollowing or unequal hollowing, don’t get too worried, there is a solution. Discuss with your plastic surgeon. There is a procedure known as lipo-fill or a fat fill, where fat is taken from the abdomen or the thigh, and it is filled into the cheeks so that it balances out both. Or if you have too much hollowing out, it may fill out your cheeks to give you a more youthful look.
