I made an Egyptian-type lock out of a single 2x4. This style of lock traces back to wooden locks found in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. It should be noted that most Egyptian locks seem to have the key enter the deadbolt rather than the separate entrance seen here. The separate keyhole seems to be more popular in European examples but the basic concept is the same. I was fascinated to find out that lock picking for this pin tumbler lock is similar in concept to many modern locks. If you would like to learn more check out:
