In front of thousands of shocked onlookers, Pope John Paul II was shot and critically wounded during a public appearance in Vatican City. Turkish gunman Mehmet Ali Ağca fired multiple times, striking the Pope in the abdomen and hand.

The world watched and prayed as he underwent emergency surgery and began a slow recovery. Against all odds, he survived.

But perhaps most incredible of all — two years later, Pope John Paul II visited his attacker in prison... and forgave him face to face.
