A History of Europe's Motorways- developing the TEN-T Road Network

The TEN-T Road Network which connects Europe, in parallel with the rail, sea and other transport links is a key infrastructure element for facilitating trade and connectivity within Europe. The creation of the Europe TEN-T Road Network commenced in the post war period from the 1950s onwards when large scale motorway development began in West Germany, France, Britain and the other western European states.

The range of motorway projects developed at the time created challenges for engineers and planners in terms of balancing the road developments with environmental protection. The important partnership between western Europe and the USA was a key relationship for knowledge sharing in relation to design and construction standards. These pioneering road projects in Europe laid the foundation of what is today the modern integrated TEN-T road network which enhances the competitiveness of the European Union.
