CBC tries to discredit Alberta independence by highlighting 14 foreign Facebook accounts

CBC published a foreign interference investigation today. It found 14 overseas Facebook accounts posting in Alberta separation groups. From Indonesia, Pakistan, India, the US, and Sri Lanka. One account made approximately $14 US per month. Jim and Iain read the whole story. Meanwhile David Eby attacked Kerry-Lynne Findlay for attending a Danielle Smith fundraiser and understanding Alberta's grievances. Jim and Iain on what the two stories have in common.

Topics covered:
► CBC's June 8, 2026 investigation finding 14 overseas Facebook accounts in popular Alberta independence groups from Indonesia, Pakistan, India, the US, and Sri Lanka, which are top contributors to separatist pages with tens of thousands of reactions, some of which steal content from real Albertans and post images of the money they make through Meta's monetization program, with one account confirmed as making approximately $14 US per month

► Jim and Iain's characterisation of the story as a discrediting operation: most people will not read past the headline, which suggests foreign interference in Alberta's political movement, when the actual story is profit-driven algorithm gaming that is a universal phenomenon happening in every political debate on every side, with the same grifters attacking Poilievre from a different account

► The expert assessment confirmed in the CBC article: this may not be classic foreign interference in the state-backed sense and is sometimes much more banal, being low-cost content production that allows people in poorer countries to earn extra money

► David Eby's response to Kerry-Lynne Findlay winning the BC Conservative leadership: calling her first policy announcement of supporting economic relations with an independent Alberta troubling, noting her first major event as leader was attending a Danielle Smith fundraiser in Calgary, and questioning when BC Conservatives will stand up for Canada

► Jim and Iain's analysis of Eby's tactic: impugning the loyalty and patriotism of opponents by insinuation rather than argument, a strategy Jim connects to authoritarian governments throughout the 20th century including Putin's registration of opposition figures as foreign agents, and which Eby uses consistently against Findlay, Smith, and Poilievre

► New polling from Insights West showing BC Conservatives edging toward the NDP in voting intentions, with the BC political landscape fragmented across multiple parties including BC Greens, OneBC, and CenterBC, with Jim and Iain noting it is still first past the post and approximately 45% is sufficient for a majority

► SecondStreet.org data from BC health regions showing foreign visitors receiving health services without paying their bills, putting BC taxpayers on the hook for approximately $200 million since 2020-2021 according to Jim's reference to the report, with Jim connecting it to the same phenomenon in the UK's NHS, which residents have long called the International Health Service

Is CBC's foreign interference investigation a genuine journalism story or a headline designed to discredit a political movement?
