Studying The History of Philosophy: Presentism, Contextualism & Hermeneutics

Why should we study the history of philosophy, and what is the proper way to actually do it? 📚 In this lecture, we dive into "historiography"—the study of how to write and interpret history—to understand how to approach the great thinkers of the past.
We will break down the three main analytical approaches philosophers use. First, learn about the Presentist approach, which evaluates past ideas by today's standards to find immediate value, but runs the risk of historical anachronism. Next, we explore the Contextualist approach, which immerses itself in the historical and cultural context of the author to get the history exactly right, but risks falling into antiquarianism. Finally, discover the Hermeneutic approach, which balances an understanding of the past with the realization that our modern perspective inevitably colors our interpretation. Essential viewing for anyone serious about studying the history of human thought!
