Consider this video the tip of the iceberg - a very simplified explanation of how US citizenship can be a lifelong burden and cost you tons of money despite providing you with no benefits if you live abroad.

Also, please research the issue before doing any #homelandsplaining. More and more Americans abroad are having to give up their citizenship because the burden is just too heavy to bear. There are 9 million Americans abroad and they are all subject to this double taxation law. Those who aren't lucky enough to live in countries that have treaties with the us are often required to pay double taxes even if they're making barely any money, never even visit the us, and don't speak a lick of English.

Add to that the fact that many Americans are now having their bank accounts closed due to the strict #Fatca laws that discourage banks from welcoming American customers and living abroad gets ridiculously more complicated that it needs to be.

Almost every other country has laws in place to protect their citizens who truly live abroad from experiencing this huge administrative burden. Generally, you are exempt from paying taxes in a country if you spend the majority of your time and are a financial resident of another country. American government isn't really into common sense, so they haven't yet adapted such humane measures.
