Menaggio is the third city in our Lake Como series, one of the most beautiful cities to visit on Lake Como and close to Milan.

Menaggio is a town in the province of Como, Lombardy, northern Italy, located on the western shore of Lake Como at the mouth of the river Senagra.

The origins of Menaggio are very ancient. The first settlements in the area are of Roman origin, although most of the evidence still visible today dates back to the Middle Ages, when the castle was built, which retains imposing perimeter walls, partially destroyed by the Grisons in 1523.

In 1525 the period of Spanish domination began, accompanied by a significant deterioration in the living conditions for the inhabitants, which lasted until 1714. With the settling of the Austrians first, and then the French, the situation on the shores of the lake made a marked improvement, which was followed by a partial demographic increase in the municipality and in the whole area in general.

The historic center of Menaggio has always fascinated tourists who come there. Piazza Garibaldi is the heart of the village together with the adjacent via Calvi, where the church of Santa Marta stands, known for hosting the tombstone of Minicio Exorato, a notable of the Roman Empire of the 1st century BC.
Not far away, on via Lusardi, is the church of S. Stefano, inside which are visible frescoes by Tagliaferri and a copy of Bernardino Luini's painting depicting Mary, Jesus and an angel.

The upper part of the town is dominated by the Castle, a structure dating back to the 10th century and already heavily damaged in the 16th century by the men of the Gray Leagues, but which still retains part of the surrounding walls.
Lower down it is also possible to admire the bridge over the Sanagra stream, where a niche is decorated with a bas-relief by Vannuccini and a chapel dedicated to the Madonna di Caravaggio.
