Rebooting the News through immersive technologies | Bianca Wright | TEDxCoventry

Journalism’s role as watchdog of society has been increasingly eroded as news organisations have competed for attention. As trust in the news media has fallen, so too has the importance of journalism’s place in a democracy. Yet we need good journalism now more than ever. We are facing a wave of problems – from climate change to poverty, migration and scarcity of resources – that require not only understanding of complex situations, but also real solutions. Rebooting journalism – and by consequence rebooting society – requires radical, innovative approaches to telling stories. Leveraging immersive technologies such as virtual reality and gamification can help us connect with those stories in unprecedented ways and offer a platform for a collaborative approach to news that drives problem solving. An award-winning technology journalist whose work has appeared in consumer and trade magazines and websites in the US, the UK, Australia, South Africa and Europe, Bianca Wright is passionate about investigating the possibilities, challenges and risks of new and emerging technologies including virtual reality and gaming.

Bianca is currently Course Director for the BA Digital Media course and an Associate of the Centre for Post-Digital Cultures at Coventry University. She holds a Masters in Science and Technology Journalism and a PhD in Media Studies focusing on gamification in serious games. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
