Cetacean ecologist, chairperson and co-founder of the MareCet Research Organization, Malaysia’s first and only non-profit organization dedicated to conserving marine mammals and their environments. It’s underlying objective is to spread the message of marine conservation to the general public and has won the highly prestigious Pew Fellowship Award in 2014. Ponnampalam used the award to conduct a risk assessment of Malaysia’s dugong population and to increase management support to protect the dugong species. Dr. Louisa’s distinguished career has extended to various parts of the world including the Bering Sea, across the North Pacific Ocean, the Red Sea, Sulu-Sulawesi Sea, the Gulf of Thailand, and more recently, the southern Andaman Sea.
