Chechnya - Opposition Denies Russian Attack Claims

(22 Nov 1994) The leader of the Chechen opposition on Tuesday (22/11) denied
that Russian forces were involved in the fighting around the
border village of Bratskoye on the weekend. Umar Avturkhanov,
leader of the Provisional Council which was set up in opposition
to President Djokhar Dudayev's government, said that not one
Russian tank or helicopter was involved in the attack. He said
that claims by Dudayev's side that Bratskoye was taken using
Russian forces were groundless and merely anti-Russian in nature.
"The situation in Chechnya is worsening every day," he added. "The
Dudayev regime is on its last legs and they know it."
