EP74: Çiya Sofrası // Featured on the NETFLIX Series CHEF'S TABLE

Çiya Sofrası in Kadıköy wasn't on our list when we came to Istanbul, we actually didn't know about it. Thankfully while we were on a food tour, our local guide suggested we come back to give it a try. The head chef Musa Dagdeviren was featured on Chef's Table and she said the food was amazing. It was a few weeks later that we hopped onto the ferry to make our way back to Kadıköy. My only regret is that we didn't come visit sooner, for this restaurant deserves more than one visit. The food is delicious and takes you on a journey, from our first bite we knew we were having something unique. Little did we know, we didn't realize the half of it. There are two shops across the street from each other, one for Kebabs and then Çiya Sofrası which has a variety of daily dishes. We were greeted and asked our host to serve us their recommendations for both a cold mezze plate and hot selections for dinner. They brought us so many things - things we had never tried before. Reading more about the Chef, he and his wife really are doing something magical here. The more we learned, the more we admired. He has been on a life long mission to save the recipes from all parts of Turkey and share them with the world. He is a researcher, teacher and anthropologist of cuisine. Chef Musa traveled all over the country talking to people in little towns, talking to the older generation, learning and discovering their recipes and traditions. Çiya Sofrası was created to bring all of these recipes from all over the country together - to bring people together. I highly recommend watching the Netflix special - Chef's Table to hear his story first hand. If you're able to watch it before you visit, even better for you to realize the beautiful meaning and care behind the food you're tasting. Every dish has a story and a beautiful tradition behind it.
